EDO, Nigeria – Former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has embarked on a medical vacation following the completion of his second term in office.
Obaseki, who handed over power to his successor, Monday Okpebholo, on November 12, 2024, announced his departure in a statement issued late Wednesday through his media adviser, Crusoe Osagie.
The former governor’s decision to step away from public view has fueled speculation about a potential investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Osagie’s statement explained that Obaseki’s vacation would allow him time to rest and undergo medical examinations.
However, it did not disclose his destination, sparking further questions among political observers and the general public.
Rumours have circulated for weeks suggesting that the EFCC may initiate a probe into Obaseki’s activities now that he is no longer shielded by the immunity of public office.
As governor, Obaseki was protected by the legal immunity afforded to all Nigerian governors, shielding him from arrest and prosecution while in office.
Observers have noted that his quick departure for an undisclosed medical check-up might indicate an attempt to avoid immediate scrutiny.
In his statement, Osagie emphasized that the former governor remains grateful to the people of Edo State for their support throughout his tenure.
“Following the completion of his second tenure as the Governor of Edo State on the 11th of November 2024, His Excellency, Godwin Obaseki has proceeded on a vacation to rest and undergo extended medical checks,” the statement reads.
Obaseki expressed appreciation to “God Almighty and the people of Edo State and Nigeria” for the opportunity to serve.
The former governor’s departure has raised concerns about his potential accountability in office, especially with the EFCC’s intensified focus on investigating public officials suspected of misconduct.
Obaseki’s recent public appearances suggested that he might have expected scrutiny following the end of his tenure.
While the EFCC has not issued any statement concerning an investigation, political analysts believe that the anti-graft agency may be preparing inquiries based on previous cases involving former state leaders.
Obaseki also took a moment in his statement to call for peace and unity among the people of Edo State.
“He urged all Edo people both at home and in the Diaspora to continue to be hopeful and pray for the peace, progress and prosperity of our State and Nigeria,” Osagie’s statement concluded.
This message struck a chord with his supporters, who took to social media to share messages of solidarity with the former governor.
“Governor Obaseki has worked hard for Edo State. He deserves this time to rest and reflect on his service,” one supporter posted on Twitter.
Under his leadership, Edo State experienced several development projects aimed at revitalising the economy, improving infrastructure, and enhancing education.
However, his administration also faced allegations of financial mismanagement, particularly related to state contracts and public funds.
The EFCC, Nigeria’s primary anti-corruption agency, has a history of scrutinising public officials after they exit office, often resulting in high-profile cases that capture national attention.
