WHAT HAPPENED?
The French captain finally realised his dream of joining Real Madrid this summer. He completed a free move to Los Blancos after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired at the end of the 2023/24 season. Mbappe’s brother Ethan followed in his elder sibling’s footsteps and left the Ligue 1 champions, completing a transfer to Lille as a free agent.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The 25-year-old, however, has now revealed that at one point last season, he had considered extending his stay with PSG in order to secure Ethan’s future in the French capital. The Real Madrid star claimed his younger brother had always dreamt of playing for Les Parisiens and for the sake of his brother’s dream, he was ready to sacrifice his own aspirations.
WHAT KYLIAN MBAPPE SAID
Speaking to Canal+, the France international said, “It’s the thing that affected me the most. He (Ethan), didn’t ask for anything. His Real Madrid was PSG. What Real meant to me, his childhood dream, was PSG. At one point, I even told him: ‘If you want me to, I’ll extend [my contract] and you can stay, we’ll stay here.’ I would have given up my dream of Madrid and stayed for him.”
He added, “Ethan told me… ‘I don’t want to stay here. What they did to you, what they did to me, it’s not normal.’ If he had told me: ‘Kylian, it’s what I want.’ I would have given up my dream of Madrid and stayed for him.”
WHAT NEXT FOR KYLIAN MBAPPE?
After scoring in Real Madrid’s win over Girona last weekend, Mbappe will be back in action for Carlo Ancelotti’s side on Wednesday as they take on Atalanta in a crucial Champions League fixture.
