ABUJA, Nigeria – After extensive deliberations between the federal government and labour leadership, following the nationwide strike declared by trade unions to press for its demands, several resolutions have been reached to address the concerns raised by Organised Labour.

The Federal Government of Nigeria yesterday engaged with Labour representatives in a crucial meeting convened in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), to find a resolution to the ongoing industrial action.

Key among these resolutions was the commitment of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, to a National Minimum Wage higher than N60,000.

In light of the commitment from the President, the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage is set to convene daily for the next week to negotiate and reach an agreement on the new minimum wage.

This proactive approach reflects the determination of both parties to swiftly address the wage issue and mitigate the impact of the ongoing strike.

In response to the government’s commitment, Organised Labour undertook to convene a meeting of its organs immediately to consider the President’s pledge.

This demonstrates Labour’s willingness to engage constructively and uphold the integrity of the negotiation process.

Crucially, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that no worker would face victimization as a result of participating in the industrial action. This commitment to protecting the rights of workers highlights the mutual respect and cooperation between the federal government and organised labour.

The resolutions were signed by representatives from both the Federal Government and Organised Labour, signifying a significant step towards resolving the impasse that led to the nationwide strike.

The agreement reflects a collaborative effort to address the concerns of Nigerian workers and foster a conducive environment for productive engagement between labour and the government.

“After exhaustive deliberation and engagement by both parties, the following resolutions were reached:

“The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria is committed to a National Minimum Wage that is higher than N60,000;

“Arising from the above, the Tripartite Committee is to meet everyday for the next one week with a view to arriving at an agreeable National Minimum Wage;

“Labour in deference to the high esteem of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria’s commitment in (ii) above undertakes to convene a meeting of its organs immediately to consider this commitment; and

“No worker would be victimized as a result of the industrial action.” The resolutions reached at the meeting stated in parts.
