Explained: Why La Liga Doesn’t Have Goal-Line Technology As Barcelona Controversially Denied Against Real Madrid In El Clasico

Barcelona saw a goal controversially disallowed in El Clasico due to the absence of goal-line technology in La Liga.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Andreas Christensen handed Barcelona the lead in the sixth minute before Vinicius Jr. brought his team back into the game by netting the equaliser from the penalty spot. In the 28th minute, Lamine Yamal flicked Raphinha’s corner towards goal and it seemed like it crossed the line before Andrey Lunin scrambled it away. VAR checked the strike from different angles before awarding the Catalan giants a corner.

THE EXPLANATION

Ahead of the 2023/24 season, El Larguero revealed that La Liga would remained the only top European league to not adopt goal-line technology as president Javier Tebas reportedly refused to pay £2.6 million ($3.2m) – the sum required to implement the technology.

WHAT JAVIER TEBAS SAID

After Barcelona fans criticsed La Liga chief over the absence of goal-line technology, Tebas took to X to respond to his critics where he shared a series of old incidents where goal-line technology was proven wrong. He added the caption: “no comment.”

DID YOU KNOW?

The Premier League was the first top European division to implement goal-line technology back in 2014 – inspired by Frank Lampard’s strike against Germany in the 2010 World Cup. The Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Serie A and Eredivisie soon followed the English league’s path and adopted it by 2015.

WHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA?

The Blaugrana will be next seen in action on April 29 as they face Valencia at home in an important league fixture.
