France are through to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals after beating Belgium 1-0 on Monday evening.

A late own goal by Jan Vertonghen propelled France into the last-8, in a match that had been largely devoid of quality and excitement.

The encounter seemed headed for extra time but with five minutes remaining, a shot from substitute, Randal Kolo Muani deflected off Vertonghen, securing the victory for France at Dusseldorf Arena.

France had squandered several opportunities before this decisive moment, with their lack of finishing touch once again apparent. Even captain, Kylian Mbappe, missed chances he would typically convert.

Belgium had a chance to take the lead before France’s late goal, as Manchester City midfielder, Kevin de Bruyne surged into space through the middle, only to have his shot saved by Mike Maignan.

That was the only notable opportunity for a below-par Belgian side, as France held on in the final minutes to advance to the quarter-finals. Having last won the Euro Championships in 2000, the French will be hoping to overcome either Portugal or Slovenia, who are themselves currently engaged in a clash for the last-8.
