VATICAN: President Donald Trump has been accused of breaking the dress code for Pope Francis’s funeral by wearing a blue suit instead of the required black attire at the Vatican service.
Trump and his wife, Melania, attended the funeral, with Melania following the dress code by wearing a black dress and black veil. However, Donald Trump was seen wearing a medium-blue suit and matching tie, which defied the funeral’s formal dress requirements.
The dress code at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City called for men to wear a dark suit with a black tie and a black button on the left lapel, while women were asked to wear long black dresses, gloves, and a veil.
Critics on social media expressed shock and anger over Trump’s disregard for the dress code. One comment read: “Trump did not even have the decency to wear a black tie, and he wore a blue suit. No respect!!” Others felt the choice of color was disrespectful.
In contrast, President Joe Biden and the UK’s Prince William both wore darker blue suits but faced much less criticism for their attire. Biden even posed for a selfie with Uganda’s Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, during the event.
Before the funeral, Trump and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky had a “very productive discussion” in St. Peter’s Basilica, marking the first in-person meeting between the two since a tense encounter in February 2025.
After the service, Trump left immediately without waiting for the Pope’s burial, which sparked further criticism. Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who led the mass, appeared to subtly criticize Trump during the service, recalling Pope Francis’s plea for people to “build bridges, not walls.” This remark seemed to reference Trump’s controversial promise to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico during his presidency.
