VGC To Conduct Background Checks On Prospective Residents, Tenants As NDLEA Discovers Drug Lab In Estate

…Restates commitment to provision of safe, drug-free environment

Victoria Garden City Property Owners & Residents Association (VGCPORA), has restated its committment to provision of a safe and drug-free environment for residents of the estate.

VGCPORA equally frowned at the discovery of a Meth Laboratory operation in the premises of one resident of the estate at the weekend by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), who carried out a sting operation based on Intelligence gathering.

In a release signed by the Association General Manager, Yusuff Morufat, it stated that it was discovered that NDLEA operatives had been on the trail of the said resident since 2017. Stressing that the Association had a longstanding commitment to providing a safe and drug-free environment, and zero-tolerance for drug and substance abuse; he condemned the discovery of the lab and said their stand had always been and still remained that alcohol and drug abuse posed a threat to the health and safety of VGC and to the security of the community.

The release expressly stated that the Association had carried out its own findings and realised that “property owners do not conduct background checks on tenants before lease of their property, and such act exposes other residents to security risk.”

According to him, henceforth, background checks would be done by the Association and would be made mandatory for all prospective residents, while same would be done before access cards are renewed for existing residents.

“Henceforth, VGCPORA will make background checks mandatory for new residents before access cards will be issued or renewed for existing residents. The act of this particular resident has exposed all occupants of properties around him to harzadous meth lab chemicals used and waste generated from production.

“According to the NDLEA officials, oil boreholes, water supply and plants 500 metres away from his address have been contaminated. Therefore, VGCPORA in conjunction with NDLEA will conduct test of water supply to properties around the location.”

In unraveling the entire mystery surrounding the operation of the lab, he hinted at looking into allegations of domestic employees that might have been involved within the community.

He requested that all hands be on deck to get to the bottom of the matter and in ridding the community of drugs and drug use. “We request that you join hands with us to make VGC a drug-free community. If you see something, say something.”
