…Mathias Pogba in plot against brother
…Sentenced to three-year prison term
…Won’t spend any of it behind bars
WHAT HAPPENED?
Mathias Pogba was arrested and charged over an £11m ($14m) extortion plot against the ex-Juventus star in late 2022. Now, a Paris court has handed Pogba’s brother a three-year prison term, with two years suspended. However, the 34-year-old will serve the remaining one-year sentence with an electronic bracelet, rather than in jail.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Pogba, 31, previously told police that a group of childhood friends, including his older brother Mathias, had requested money for “protection services” – stretching back 13 years. Pogba himself admitted he contemplated retirement in 2023 during this extortion plot but now he may be able to get some closure following this verdict.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Frenchman will be able to return to football in March 2025 after his four-year doping ban was reduced to 18 months earlier this year. He is currently a free agent after he and Juventus mutually agreed to terminate his contract there.
WHAT NEXT?
For now, 2018 World Cup winner Pogba will hope he can move on from this episode and get picked up by a new club soon.
