Nigeria’s Sports Minister Vows To Fire Those Found Liable For Poor Olympics Performance

EROMOSELE OMOIKE

ABUJA, Nigeria – Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, says some government officials will be relieved of their responsibilities if findings prove that they contributed to Nigeria’s medal-less outing at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The minister, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Wednesday, said all of the issues that arose at the games would be interrogated.

“All of those things, I am going to engage, I am going to interrogate,” he said.

“You don’t fire unless you interrogate. I have always stated my determination that I am not going to allow things to lie low; I am going to take them up one by one.”

Asked if heads will roll, the minister said, “Well, if that is what it takes; if my findings and interrogations get to that point that people become liable, people become responsible, for the kind of negative publicity that we had at the Olympics, why not?”

Enoh further said the different sporting federations in the country need comprehensive reforms for efficient sports development.

The minister, who apologised to Nigerians over the poor outing in Paris, indicted the leadership of sporting federations for the lacklustre performance, emphasising the need for systems and structures at the federations to get the best athletes to represent Nigeria and get the desired medals in the next games.
