‘That’s What We’ve Been Missing’ – Thomas Tuchel Hit With Jibe As Bayern Munich Honorary President Praises Vincent Kompany And Says Players Are ‘Very Angry’ At Missing Out On Bundesliga Title

Honorary Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness aimed a subtle dig at former head coach Thomas Tuchel, while singing the praises of Vincent Kompany.

…Backs new boss to deliver silverware

WHAT HAPPENED?

Tuchel left Bayern at the end of last season amid a chaotic search to find a replacement that eventually ended with Kompany being appointed. Now Hoeness believes the Belgian has brought something back to the Bundesliga outfit they they “have been missing”. He also took a thinly veiled swipe at Tuchel, while saying the players were “very angry” to miss out on the league title to Bayer Leverkusen last season.

WHAT ULI HOENESS SAID

He told reporters: “I am very, very confident that we will be at the top again next year. If we play football the way we can and don’t throw away a 2-0 win like we did in Heidenheim or Hoffenheim, then things will be different again. The players who didn’t win the championship are very angry.”

Hoeness added he had “got to know Kompany and work is being done there, that is something we have been missing. In general, I say what I mean, it seems that too little work was done [under Tuchel].”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

This is a new, uncertain era for Bayern under new coach Kompany. They were unable to land many of their top managerial targets and in the end had to, in a sense, settle for the ex-Manchester City defender. The German giants failed to win any silverware last season, so Kompany may be seen as a hero if he can return them to winning ways.

WHAT NEXT?

Kompany’s Bayern side take on Tottenham on Saturday, before rounding off their pre-season campaign against WSG Tirol three days later. The new manager’s tenure officially begins on August 16 against Ulm in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.
