30 Months Ago, Elon Musk Spent 41.8 Billion Euros On Twitter. Today, After 874 Days, He Finally Gets His First Satisfaction With X

After nearly 2.5 years of ups and downs, Elon Musk finally sees a glimmer of success with X. The platform’s valuation has just hit the same figure Musk originally paid, but the journey hasn’t been easy

After nearly two and a half years of turbulence, Elon Musk has finally seen a sign of success with X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

On March 20, 2025, the platform’s valuation reached €41.8 billion, the same amount Musk paid for it in October 2022. While this marks a symbolic milestone, it has taken Musk 874 days to get to this point—a journey filled with bold decisions, controversies, and significant challenges.

A Risky Move and a Controversial Beginning

When Musk acquired Twitter for €41.8 billion in 2022, the decision raised eyebrows across the tech industry. His leadership immediately sparked criticism, with critics questioning his vision for the platform.

Musk, a strong advocate for free speech, rolled back many of Twitter’s content moderation rules. He also fired nearly 80% of the workforce, arguing that drastic restructuring was needed to ensure the company’s financial stability.

These decisions led to immediate consequences. Advertisers, concerned about the platform’s new direction, pulled their budgets. Musk’s rebranding of Twitter into X didn’t help ease the criticism, and the platform became increasingly associated with disinformation and hate speech.

Internal Struggles and Legal Challenges

Behind the scenes, the situation at X was far from smooth. Former employees described the work environment as toxic, with many citing broken promises and overwhelming pressure.

One particularly shocking incident involved a software engineer who was fired on the spot after disagreeing with Musk about his declining popularity on the platform.

Musk’s aggressive approach also led to legal backlash. In one case, former employees were asked to repay severance overpayments, prompting lawsuits.

Meanwhile, Musk continued to double down on his vision, accusing the advertising industry of an illegal boycott and launching lawsuits in response.

Fighting Back with New Ventures

Instead of backing down, Musk pressed forward with his long-term plans. He launched xAI, a new company focused on artificial intelligence, and began positioning X as a multifaceted platform that could offer more than just social media.

Musk envisioned X as a hub for online payments and other digital services, expanding far beyond its original purpose. Despite the controversies, Musk’s vision continued to attract investment.

High-profile firms like Sequoia Capital and Fidelity Investments kept their support for X, even as public opinion remained divided. Slowly, the company’s value started to recover, eventually returning to €41.8 billion in March 2025.

The Future of X: Can Musk’s Vision Succeed?

Although X has regained its initial valuation, the future is still uncertain. Musk faces the challenge of addressing the massive debt accumulated from the acquisition, and there is no clear path to ensuring long-term stability.

Will X be able to win back advertisers and users? Musk’s gamble on diversifying X into a multifunctional platform is still unfolding, and only time will tell if his bold strategy will ultimately pay off.

While Musk’s recent success is significant, the road ahead remains full of hurdles. The platform’s transformation into a broader digital ecosystem could either secure its place in the future of social media or prove to be another gamble that ultimately falls short.

Musk is not an advocate for free speech. He’s not a so-called “free speech absolutist”. He lashes out and suppresses anyone who has an opinion he doesn’t like. He’s a right-wingnut with a mind half-an-inch wide, an ego that spans to Neptune, and the charisma of a bloated drown victim. He is anti-LGBTQ, performed a National Socialist salute on stage, a war-profiteering, a beneficiary of an apartheid emerald mine, and calls for the mass deportation of people despite being an undocumented immigrant himself.

Don’t glaze his shlong, Arezki. He is many things. An advocate is not on the list.
